Andrea González Caballero

Described by OperaWorld Magazine as “the female voice of the Spanish guitar,” Andrea Gonzalez Caballero is recognized as one of the leading classical guitarists of her generation. Her musical talent and artistic individuality have earned her top prizes at major international competitions, including First Prize at the XIII Alhambra International Guitar Competition in Valencia and First Prize and Special Prize at the XL International Competition F. Sor in Rome.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION AND PERFORMANCESHer artistry has received significant international recognition from critics and institutions alike. BBC Music Magazine described Andrea as one of “today’s young rising stars of the classical guitar.” She has performed at major venues and festivals including the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, the National Auditorium and Fundación Juan March in Madrid, the Tony Bennett Concert Hall in New York City, San Francisco Performances, King’s Cross in London, and Sage Gateshead in Newcastle.

Andrea has collaborated as a soloist with orchestras including the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, the Cottbus Staatstheater Orchestra, the National Chamber Orchestra of Moldova, and the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen in Germany. Recent highlights include performances with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, collaborations with acclaimed opera singer Isabel Signoret, and the recent IDENTIDADE performance at Centro Botín in Santander, Spain, alongside flutist Amalia Tortajada.

RECORDINGS AND MUSICAL PROJECTS. Andrea’s recordings and touring projects have further established her as an important ambassador of the Spanish guitar tradition. Her acclaimed album Reencuentros led to a successful international tour with numerous sold-out performances across the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Australia. The recording features transcriptions of works by Manuel de Falla, Albéniz, and López-Quiroga, highlighting her commitment to bringing Spanish repertoire to new audiences.

Her Naxos Records release, featuring world premieres alongside works by Britten, Albéniz, and Tárrega, received critical acclaim and was awarded the prestigious Golden Melómano distinction. Melómano Magazine praised the recording as “a delicate, elegant and majestic musical world.”

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AND COLLABORATIONS. Beyond her performance career, Andrea is deeply committed to expanding and renewing the classical guitar repertoire through collaborations with contemporary composers and interdisciplinary projects. She has premiered works by Sergio Assad, Joaquín Clerch, Clarice Assad, Gabriela Ortiz, Carlos Fernando López, Dustin Carlson, Johanny Navarro, and Elisenda Fábregas, among others.

In 2020, she co-founded IDENTIDADE, an innovative artistic platform bringing together women creators from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds. The project’s debut album, created together with flutist Amalia Tortajada, features works written specifically for the ensemble by award-winning composers Clarice Assad, Gabriela Ortiz, Elisenda Fábregas, and Johanny Navarro. The album received the Carles Santos Award for Best Classical Music Album, the Melómano de Oro distinction, and was a finalist at the MIN Independent Music Awards in Spain.

Andrea’s artistic collaborations extend beyond the concert stage. She co-composed and performed music for the American film No Man’s Land and released EUSKARAZ together with Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning composer and producer Carlos Fernando López.

EDUCATION AND ACADEMIC BACKGROUND. Andrea received support from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), AIE (Society of Performing Artists of Spain), and the Provincial Council of Guipúzcoa. She graduated with honors from the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf, Germany, later earning a Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she received the James Winship Lewis Memorial Prize. She subsequently completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami.
